Bodysuit

I had the opportunity to make a mesh bodysuit during my time at Laika. Since the body was a dressing form with no legs, there was some unconventional pattern pieces I created to fit the lower half of the dressing body.
Scooter Dress
The skirt of the dress contained box pleats, each pleat was individually ironed, folded, and backed with a 4-way stretch fabric.

Multiple forms of rigging were used in the skirt to make it animatable. Each pleat folds was stitched, along with elastic stitching between pleats, and tin paddles for bend.

Fabric Development

The base of the jacket was sourced from a plain white faux suede. The fabric was first vat dyed a light tan. I created a texture in photoshop that was sublimation dyed on top of the tan fabric to create a bright orange color with a unique finish.

The fur trim of the coat was sourced from a poly sherpa fabric, the sherpa was pillowy, but too large. I needed to create a similar texture that was to scale with the puppet. An embroidery pass was made over the sherpa with an elastic bottom thread. Then the fur was picked out, brushed, and cut until the final fur look was achieved. The fur was set with a watered down adhesive
The embroidered embellishments went through hundreds of tests until the final design was reached. Color, size, thread, spacing, and alignment was constantly dissected.

I created the original design in Illustrator and converted the vector art into stitches using Embrillance. The embroidery was done on a Bernina machine.
